REOPEN TIPS:

Grease Traps

  1. GREASE TRAPS: Grease in grease traps that have had no movement extended periods of time will harden and could cause backups.
    1. Lines associated with grease traps can also be clogged with hardened grease
    2. In order to avoid backups and emergency Line Jetting it is recommended you contact your service provider prior to opening
    3. Remember that the grease that was in traps before you shut down is still there.
    4. REMEMBER: The water in grease traps is very acidic and sitting stagnant will allow it to deteriorate the grease trap at a much faster rate than normal and could cause leaks, with the only option being a costly, but avoidable, replacement of the trap itself.
    5. *Highly recommend contacting your service provider to perform a grease trap cleaning prior to reopen
  2. SMALL GREASE TRAP CLEANING: For small “under sink” grease traps less than 50 gallons
    1. Use cold water: Wait 10 minutes after your dishwasher and sinks drains
      1. Cool water alls fats, oils, and grease to rise to the top
    2. Remove grease trap cover
      1. Be careful not to damage the gasket seal
      2. Use a drill to remove bolts (If applicable)
      3. Use a crowbar or large flat head screwdriver to pry trap lid off the base
    3. Remove grease
      1. Utilize a scoop or pitcher to remove floating grease
      2. Use a powerful shop vac for excess water beneath floating grease
    4. Scrape side of grease trap
      1. Finish scraping with steel wool or a pot scrubber
      2. Use dish soap or approved cleaning chemicals to lessen the smell
    5. Flush with fresh clean water to complete the cleaning
    6. Replace the lid
      1. Carefully replace the lid and bolts/screws if applicable
    7. Properly dispose of grease
